Redbridge Fishing Lakes, one of the fastest growing silver fisheries in the south of the UK is known for a lot of unique features such as its on-site cafe and immaculate washroom facilities, fishing live web-cam, King fisher pool, bird watching hut and so on. The list is endless.
One of the key features Redbridge Lakes is quickly becoming unique for is its accessibility. Redbridge Lakes is arguably the most accessible fishing venue in the South boasting 64 pegs, all can be accessed by wheel chair with relative ease. It also offers toilet and washroom facilities for the disabled and its cafe is also fully accessible with a large varied menu.
In this feature, we discuss the unique approach that Redbridge Lakes takes to angling with one of our members, Tony Parker.Tony suffers from “Guillain-Barre Syndrome” a long-term member at Redbridge Lakes . Tonys' love for angling started at the young age of seven. Although it has sometimes been a battle for Tony to find a suitable venue that is flat enough to accommodate his wheelchair, this has never stopped his passion for fishing.
Tony was diagnosed with Guillain-Barre Syndrome ten years ago at the age of 47. Guillain-Barre Syndrome is a serious disorder that occurs when the body's defence immune system mistakenly attacks part of the nervous system. This leads to nerve inflammation that causes paralysis which results in muscle weakness.
The launch of Redbridge Lakes came as a blessing as now Tony can fish from any peg he wants, when he wants, whenever he wants, without any concerns of access.
“I heard about Redbridge Lakes through a friend of mine”, says Tony. “When I first entered Redbridge Lakes , I was pleasantly surprised at what was available to me. My first thoughts were how secure it was. Fishing tackle can be very expensive and the security gates and cameras made me feel at ease.” It stops unwanted people entering the site.
“There are lots of subtle little things that make Redbridge Lakes a perfect venue for the disabled”, continues Tony. “For one, every peg is accessible with a wheel chair, which is a real rarity. It was nice to know that I could fish wherever I wanted to fish. The staff are extremely friendly and helpful and the on-site café serves great food, which they are also happy to bring out to your swim.”. Bait can be bought easily in the fishing tackle shop and keep nets and landing nets are supplied free of charge for use on the day, so there is no need to worry about fishy smells being taken home in your car.
“One other subtle thing is the outside tap. If you are in a wheelchair, you will know that when fishing, your wheelchair wheels can get very muddy. It is nice to know that there is a facility in place which allows you to clean your wheels or boots before you leave, saving you the need to try and clean them at home. I would gladly recommend Redbridge Lakes to anyone; disabled or able bodied, Its Brilliant”.
